Urban RegenARTation

A project aimed at increasing the development level of the cultural sector in Iași, through a mural work of proportions, commemorating Virgil Săhleanu, a union leader assassinated in September 2000.
The project took place from the 29th of September to the 20th of December 2021, in the municipality of Iași and was funded by the Iași City Hall.

Project details

The second edition of “RegenerARTE Urbană” took place from September 29th to December 20th 2021, in the Nicolina neighborhood. The mural highlighted Virgil Săhleanu - a union leader assassinated in 2000 because he fought for the rights of the Tepro Factory employees. Virgil Săhleanu – lider de sindicat asasinat în 2000 din cauză că lupta pentru dreptatea angajaților Uzinei Tepro.

Main activities::

  • Creating an identity for the Nicolina neighborhood through a mural covering 440 sqm on the Union House of Culture Iași (November 24th - December 20th);
  • Updating the urban art route;
  • Collaborative artwork vernissage (December 11th); 
  • A virtual tour of the urban art in Iași (December 13th);
  • Update of the online urban art map of Iasi and physical format.

Objectives

  • Urban regeneration of the Nicolina neighborhood from October 15th to December 15th 2021;
  • Encouraging experimental, innovative, and original initiatives to facilitate access to culture for at least 500 Iași residents from October 1st to December 20th 2021;
  • Increasing Iași’s visibility, notoriety and cultural scene from October 15th to December 20th 2021;
  • Increasing the expertise and professionalism of at least 10 artists and workers from the cultural sector in Iași from October 1st to December 20th 2021.

Results

  • Achievement of the largest mural in Iași - 440 sqm;
  • Encouragement of artistic creation - especially in the field of street art/mural painting, but also tangentially in photo-video and graphic design;
  • Encouragement of experimental, innovative and original initiatives;
  • Supporting the development of the cultural sector in Iași;
  • Urban beautification of the Nicolina neighborhood through a mural painting;
  • Raising public awareness about the story of Virgil Săhleanu;
  • Updating the urban art route in the municipality of Iasi;
  • Updating the online art map with the urban art route in the municipality of Iasi.
