Juggling

Although today "to juggle" has many meanings and there are numerous types of juggling, in Romania the word usually brings to mind football juggling. However, in this material, we will refer to juggling as part of the Flow Arts.

Juggling, or Flow Arts, is the ability of an individual to create patterns of shape and color by controlling one or more objects (most often in the air, as defined in the Webster dictionary). In other words, it is the art—derived from circus arts and ancient rituals—of creating images using moving objects. There are many objects that can be manipulated, but here we will present only a few.

It is an art of balance, challenging gravity—and winning. You play with weights; you have to sense the spot in space where the object will fall, to precisely determine the force with which to throw it and in what direction. In the end, you may not be able to answer these technical questions, but you will feel it—you’ll do it instinctively, as a learned skill. Juggling used to be part of circus performances, an act that surprised, even shocked (depending on the objects being juggled), and was accessible mainly to those within the circus world.accesibilă celor din lumea circului.

Juggling, in the form we are referring to, is not something that appeared recently—it has been present for over 4,000 years in places like China, Egypt, North America, Micronesia, and Mesopotamia. At the court of Ancient China, ladies would use juggling with Diabolo as a form of relaxation, while in North America, the Devil Stick (the ancestor of the Flower Stick) was used in shamanic rituals. In New Zealand, poi were used by the Māori people in dance-theatre performances and combat training. Nowadays, thanks to its strong visual impact on the public, juggling can be considered a form of street performance. However, due to its powerful influence on individual development, it can also be used as a learning method—first and foremost, as a way to learn about oneself.
